What each UTM parameter means
utm_source names where the click came from — newsletter, instagram, partner-site. utm_medium describes the type of traffic — email, social, cpc, referral. utm_campaign is the promotion the link belongs to, such as spring_launch.
utm_term and utm_content are optional. Term is normally the paid keyword; content separates two links inside the same email or ad so you can tell which creative earned the click.
How a campaign URL is structured
The parameters are appended to your page URL as a query string, and analytics tools read them on arrival. The page itself is unaffected, so the visitor sees exactly what they would have seen from an untagged link.
Keep naming consistent: pick one spelling per source and medium and reuse it. Tag external links only — using UTMs on links between your own pages overwrites the original source of the session.
